Reality

I missed posting this Monday, a somewhat obvious statement. I’m traveling, over in the UK on business but with a little mini-vacation bolted onto the front. For some reason the first quarter of the year is a travel season for me this year, with a couple other work trips coming up soon. Work trips are, incidentally, the most frequent reason that I’ve missed weekly posts on Cannibal Halfling. I may miss this week’s post, or it may go up quite late, on Friday. Either way, the travel has disrupted my commitment to the site.

As the title implies, I am always trying to be realistic about this. Travel, especially business travel, is already a stressor, and cramming in more writing in between long flights and many (many, many) meetings can have a multiplicative effect. I actually did try to write through travel in the past, remembering the time I used a post to push through jetlag after arriving for a conference back in 2024. I don’t like doing that, though, and I’m really not a fan of the effect it has on my writing, especially if I don’t have a post or topic already queued up.

I am writing this post from my hotel room in London, which isn’t ideal but, for a short update post, is fine. That does mean another month without fiction, though at least I can keep up my weekly post cadence as I try to find a solid chunk of time in which to write out the next part of the story. This is why my fiction writing comes in bursts; I do have to schedule other things (like my job) first. My travel is going to continue through March, but I should then have a reprieve until at least November. There is a chance for some leisure travel which may disrupt this as well; I find it easier to write on vacation but I also like taking vacations without a computer. My previous vacation disruptions involved camping and a long bike tour, and I regret nothing. Other vacations have seen me write or generate a backlog.

There’s really no strong thesis here, other than to say thank you for bearing with me when occasional disruptions occur. Nothing breeds a readership better than regular content, and nothing breaks it faster than losing that regularity. As such, I at least want to say thanks during one of my irregular periods and explain what’s going on. Regularly scheduled posting should return next week, and continue at least until my next business trip.
